RLymYC Rally to Yarmouth

RLymYC Rally to Yarmouth

Following a suggestion that a rally to Yarmouth on a Saturday in January would be an excellent way for children to accompany their parents in the school holiday, the Cruising Committee decided to go ahead with this suggestion. On a very grey January 18th nine motor boats and two sailing boats set out for Yarmouth with forty three brave souls on board. Contrary to our experiences with summer expeditions to Yarmouth we had no difficulty in mooring as we appeared to be the only visitors that day. So confident were the harbour authorities in our seamanship that they did not even deploy any boatmen to meet us.

After dispersing on arrival to various hostelries for refreshments we all gathered at the Wheatsheaf for lunch at 12.30 where the food and service were excellent. Following a short speech by the Captain of Cruising advertising the forthcoming Burns Night the organiser, Andrew Sutherland, welcomed everybody, thanked the Wheatsheaf staff for looking after us so well, told everybody about the next cruise to Newtown Creek and then handed over to Sue Sutherland who had organised a short quiz for the children who were anticipated to be with us. Unfortunately no children had joined us , except for our two year old grandson, but Derek Tilley and Roger Garlick very sportingly took up the challenge and completed the quiz. Needless to say, both had all the correct answers and the matter was settled with a tiebreak in Roger Garlick's favour.

After lunch we all returned safely in very calm seas to Lymington. A January cruise to Yarmouth is certainly something we need to consider for 2026. Andrew Sutherland Rally Organiser
