Notes for applicants
The below guidance provides support for completing this form. If you have any questions, please contact our Membership Secretary on 01590 672677 or by email membership@rlymyc.org.uk.
-
Membership types
- Full: All Club privileges, including the right to vote. You need a proposer and seconder Note C.
- Provisional: Full use of the Club's facilities for up to a year, without a vote. It's ideal if you're new to the Club, the area or boating. At the end of the year you can apply to become a Full Member, which needs a proposer and seconder at that point, or you can leave.
- Overseas: Full Membership for people living abroad. Again, it needs a proposer and seconder.
- Junior (ages 8–17): Uses a separate Junior application form. Junior Members get Club activities and discounted coaching in the Junior and Youth fleets. A parent or guardian must be a Member, or must appoint a Member to act on their behalf.
Not sure which is right for you? Call 01590 672677 or email membership@rlymyc.org.uk and we will talk it through.
-
Couples, families and dependents
You can apply on your own or together with your spouse or partner. Children under 18 are included in Family Membership:
- When two adults join, children under 18 are free.
- When one adult joins, the first child is charged and any further children under 18 are free.
-
Proposer and seconder
Full and Overseas Membership applications need the support of two existing Members. Each of them must:
- be a Full Member, and have been one for at least two years
- have known you personally for at least six months
- fill in a Proposer and Seconder form supporting your application
Provisional Members don't need a proposer or seconder to join. They will need one if they move on to Full Membership after their first year.
-
Getting to know you
This section is optional, but it helps us introduce you to the right people and activities. For example, we may pair you with a Member Buddy: an existing Member with similar interests who can help you settle in.
The Club runs on its Members' skills. If you're happy to share your work experience, we may get in touch when it would help the Club. Saying yes doesn't commit you to anything.
-
Your personal data
To be a Member, you need to accept the Club's Privacy Statement, which is published on the Club website. In short:
- The Club will keep and use the information you give us to run your Membership.
- Some of it may be published to other Members, as set out in the Privacy Statement. For example, your name is shown on the Club noticeboard while your application is considered.
- You can ask for particular details, such as your home address, not to be published. We will look at each request individually.
-
Who needs to sign
Every adult on the application signs: you, and your spouse or partner if they're applying. Typing your full name counts as your signature. By signing, each of you confirms the information is correct and agrees to the data note above Note E.
-
What happens next
- The form will be sent directly to the Membership Secretary.
- Your name goes on the Club noticeboard for 28 days.
- Depending on your Membership type, you may be invited for an informal chat, or paired with a Member Buddy.
- The General Committee considers your application.
- The Membership Secretary will confirm your start date and how to pay, and send you some useful information to help you get involved.
-
Payments
You don't pay anything until the 28 days are up and the General Committee has approved your application. At that point you pay:
- a one-off joining (onboarding) fee, and
- your first monthly subscription. Or, if you prefer, a pro-rata amount for the rest of the Club year.
Our Membership Secretary will contact you with regard to payments and setting up a Direct Debit.
